The oval salt cellars are raised up on four ball and claw form legs. The bodies of the cellars rise gracefully at either end and have beautiful pierced bodies to show the cobalt liners to best advantage. The sides of both pieces are nicely hand-engraved, both have the exact same design and feature a beaded border at the top edge. The center cartouche is monagrammed’BAU’ on both pieces. Even though both pieces are identical in every way, there are two different makers and different dates for this pair. Obviously one of the salt cellars to the original pair was lost, and an identical one was commissioned as a replacement. Or possibly the owner had commissioned several pairs to expand the set, and because they were identical the pairs were not kept distinct when the original estate was broken up. Both pieces are fully hallmarked on the underside with the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard’s head crowned for the city of London, the duty mark of king George III’s head. The two pieces have different date letters; one has the date letter’A’ corresponding to 1796 and a maker’s mark’WA? For William Abdy (either I or II). The other has date letter’n’ for 1788 and a maker’s mark’RH’ for Robert Hennell. Everything is in excellent overall condition. Both salts have a single split to the body, just above where one of the legs joins the body. The damages are very insignificant and do not affect the salts. Damage is not visible without extremely close inspection. The glass is in perfect condition. There are no other problems of any kind. The total weight for both including the glass liners is 309 grams. The weight of just the sterling silver is 110 grams or 3.85 ounces. The height is 2 1/8 inches. Each measures 3 1/2 x 2 1/4.
