Antique, Victorian armorial condiment set, 4 salts with glass liners and matching spoons. Vermeil – gilt washed sterling silver. Made London England, 19th century by Robert Hennell. Measurements: salts are 2 inches tall; diameter of upper rim is 2 1/2 – 2 5/8inches; spoons 3 5/8inches long; weight of silver (not including the liners) is 335grams. (bowls alone weigh 61,9g, 66.9g, 67.5g and 68.3g). Exceptional : round base with larger round bowls. THe outside lavishly patterned with engraved and chased decoration with raised flowers in a trellis background. Textured variations, raised and engraved depth contrasts, and a superbly luxurious gilt wash over the sterling silver. Each salt has a quatrefoil reserve with multiple borders with finely engraved armorial / coat of arms, featuring a long-horned stag under a banner that reads: PROBITATE / AC / VIRTUTE. Each salt has a clear glass liner. Each glass is accompanied with a matching salt spoon / server: in the same gorgeous quality vermeil, round bowl, French influenced foliate join of bowl and handle with figure 8, overlapping design with gold beading and further French influenced decoration to the shaped handle. Hallmarks: each piece is hallmarked. Lion passant, leopard head, queen’s head facing left, maker’s mark and date mark. Most of the maker’s marks are RH, while two salts have R. H (the dot in the center). The same two pieces have a date letter that appears to be a capital R (for 1852) and the balance of the pieces have a small case’r’ for the date letter.
