Cased Silver Salt Cellars & Spoons Hallmarked Birmingham 1906 by Mappin & Webb
This set consists of four salt cellars and spoons made from sterling silver. The cellars have scrolled, decorative rims and sit on four pad feet. They come complete with their original blue glass liners. Two of the spoons came with the set and are original but two have been added. They are of the same design but slightly shorter The salt cellars are hallmarked for Birmingham 1906 with the makers mark of Mappin & Webb and the 2 original spoons are marked for the same year. The other spoons are hallmarked for 1903 & 1912 respectively. The set is presented in its original brown-coloured case with cream silk lining to the lid (with the Mappin & Webb stamp) and green velvet to the base. The cellars are in beautiful condition and sit nice and level on the feet. The only things to mention are a very small dint to the bottom of one and that, after 111 years, there will be tiny surface abrasions and marks caused through use. There are some small opaque spots inside the cellars caused by the rubbing of the liners. The spoons are in very good condition too with no signs of wear or kinks. The only damage to the liners is a small chip to the edge of one which is shown in the photos below. The case is sound but quite tired and the lock mechanism doesnt work so it wont shut. The silk has some areas of staining which is particularly noticeable around the sides and the strap between the lid and base has broken away. The velvet is in good condition and still quite plush and rich in colour. There are some small areas of lightening where the silver has been in contact with it over the years. Unfortunately, all the elastic straps that would have originally held the spoon have disintegrated over time. Cellars – 5 cm (2) square across the rims & 3.2 cm (1.25) tall Spoons – 5.7 cm (2.25) length of 2 spoons 5.5 cm (2.2) length of other 2 spoons Case – 23.3cm (9.25) by 17.2cm (6.75) by 7.5cm (3) maximum Weight – 123 grams (silver weight alone of cellars without liners) 14 grams (weight of all four spoons) 579 grams (combined weight of case, cellars, liners & spoons).
