VINTAGE. 916 SILVER RUSSIAN SHADED ENAMEL OPEN SALT CELLAR DIP DISH 1950s
916 SILVER RUSSIAN SHADED ENAMEL OPEN SALT CELLAR DIP DISH 1950s. This is a lovely little silver Russian made shaded enamel open salt cellar. This one is a shallow bowl shape with no feet. It is colorfully enameled in four different colors (cobalt blue, powder blue, red and green) of enamel. This is hand enameled in the cloisonné technique for which the Russian craftsmen & craftswomen are so famous for. I would estimate that 95% of the sides of the salt are covered with enamel. Originally the exposed silver areas were covered with a gold gilding or wash (most of which is no longer there), commonly referred to as vermeil. A very skillfully made, unusual and high quality little salt cellar. This particular set has been in my collection since 1989. The underside of the salt is marked with two marks. One mark is a Kokoshnik style mark with a right facing womans head and showing a silver content of. 916 (slightly below sterling); this mark is very hard to read and I believe it to be from the 1950s. There is also a makers mark consisting of three Cyrillic letters or symbols which may be the equivalent of LFB but for which I was unable to find a match within the known marks. I found nothing in these sources that verifies any of this information. A fine quality, beautiful and desirable little salt cellar! I do my best to describe all items as accurately as possible and to the best of my ability. Some of my photos may be somewhat lighter or darker than actual to better show detail or color. However, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or with requests for additional pictures. Our store has many unique and interesting items in several different categories from 35 years of our dealing and collecting antiques and collectables. The salt is in very good to excellent original condition. Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description of this item. I see no dents, dings or breaks to the silver. I see no loss or damage to the enamel decoration. Only a small amount of the original gold gilding on the silver remains and there is some tarnish to the silver on the top rim and inside the bowl see the photos. Knowing that some collectors prefer the patina I did not try to clean the piece. There are only a few light signs of wear and a very tiny amount of flaking to the black that is covering the gilding around the body of the piece. It is in excellent condition for its age. Please keep in mind these photos may be blown up at least 8-10 times normal, so anything you see will look 8-10 times larger in the photos than it really is. Please note: if you see a dark spot in the photos it is from my camera and is not a mark on the piece. It will be either just to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on the right side of the photo. The salt is about 1.75 (4.4 cm) in diameter and sits about. 8125 (2.1 cm) off the table. About 1.25 ounces (33 grams). On heavier items I will also offer a less expensive option, if available.
