Cased Vintage Sterling Silver Cruet Set (Mustard/Pepper Pots & Salt Cellar)1934
Vintage Sterling Silver Cruet Set. This cruet set comprises a mustard pot, salt cellar, pepper pot and two condiment spoons which are made from sterling silver. The hollowware is of hexagonal form with 2 original blue glass liners and the spoons are in the Old English pattern. The mustard pot has a domed, hinged lid with finial and the pepper pot has a pull-off lid. All pieces have the makers mark of William Neale and, with the exception of the salt cellar, are hallmarked for Birmingham 1934. The cellar is hallmarked for Birmingham 1929. All pieces are of exactly the same design so I suspect the salt cellar is a different date because of a mix up in the factory or in the jewellers when the set was put together. Ive found this to be a very common occurrence. The set is presented in its original brown-coloured case with cream silk lining to the lid and black velvet to the base. The set is in good, usable condition but, after 84 years, there are some things to bring to your attention. The pepper pot is in very good condition with no bruises, the cap fits nice and securely and there is no wobble to the pot. The hinge of the mustard pot works well and the lid closes nice and flush but there are two small, light bruises to a front panel. The salt cellar has the most issues with the least noticeable being a very small, light bruise near the top of one panel. However, down by the foot, there are 3 tiny holes to the corners. Its an odd position for this to result from wear through polishing, so I suspect they have occurred as a result of the corners being the weakest part in these angular pieces. These holes are shown in the photos but would not affect use due to the cellar having a liner. The interior of the cellar has some pitting which normally results from contact with the liner and salt. The spoons are in good order with just a light kink to the stem of each. The case is sound but has suffered a bit over the years. To the exterior, there is a very noticeable area of missing covering and there are some scuffs to the corners. One hinge had come away so Ive replace the screws but there is no covering over the hinge plate. Inside, the silk and velvet are in good condition bu there are some brown spots in the recesses that hold the pots which may have been caused by condiments over the years. All aspects are shown in the photos below and are reflected in the asking price for what is still a functional set.
