Very early antique Gorham coin silver footed open salt cellar, which could be used as a master salt because of its size. The bottom of the salt cellar is marked “coin” and “100”. It also has the customary Gorham hallmarks, customary except for the fact that the lion figure is “rampant”, i. These Gorham hallmarks are consistent with the Gorham & Co. The fact that this open salt cellar is clearly marked “coin” is also consistent with that date range, in that Gorham ceased to produce items of coin silver in 1868 when the company went to the sterling standard. This beautiful old open salt is highly decorated, and has a very ornate “SA” monogram in one of the two cartouches. The somewhat large capacity suggests the cellar may be a master salt. The salt is approximately 1 5/8″ tall and 1 7/8″ in diameter across the top. The interior is gilt. With 150+ years of age and use, there are a few slight dents/dings in this piece and a few very slight irregularities in the design pattern, two on each side, which may have been the result of professional removal of side handles. If so, these small irregularities in the design have been highly polished and are barely noticeable, as shown in the photos above.
