Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for a gorgeous antique Sterling Silver and shell master salt cellar in the form of a basket, c. T he top of the master salt is made of Sterling Silver and is made in two hinged sections with elaborate reticulated decoration. The handle is fixed (does not swing) and has an embossed design. The base of the salt cellar is made of an actual shell with a Sterling Silver collar and is mounted onto a stepped base. The shell is fixed to the base at the bottom with a screw that is covered with an oval Sterling Silver medallion on the inside. The two hinges on the top lift toward the center and are tight with the lids opening and closing correctly. This lovely master salt is marked with English hallmarks in six plates on each piece of silver with marks for Birmingham, Sterling, date code for 1909 and with maker’s stamp for Gourdel, Vales & Co. Measures 3 3/8″ high (to top of handle), 1 3/4″ high (at side of basket), 4 3/8″ long and 2 1/2″ deep. This nice master salt cellar is in excellent Estate condition with no noted flaws to the silver or to the shell.
