They bear a full sets of hallmarks to the underside: one is stamped with Waters’s maker’s mark registered in 1769, and the other a mark that is given as “unidentified” in Grimwade (3692, 3693 & 3694) but is likely to be a mark used by Waters (who commenced work in 1737) prior to 1769 (and probably originally listed in the missing register for smallworkers). These attractive and useful items remain in very good antique condition with age-appropriate wear (see condition description) and bear a period heraldic crest of a stag’s head engraved to the sides. Please note: these two salt cellars of different dates, although very similar and marked with the same crest, are not an exact pair. They are being offered together because of the interest of the two different maker’s marks for James Waters. Width: 2 1/2in & 2 5/8in (6.3cm & 6.7cm). Height: 1 1/2in (3.8cm). Weight (2): 3.63 troy oz (113g). See my listings for other salt cellars by related silversmiths. Sudb snnnn A37 8109 8129.
