6 Repousse Silver Antique Open Salt Cellars with Figural Spoons. We are pleased to present this old estate item of ours for your consideration. We’ve actually had it around for quite a few years, but it had been misplaced, and only recently turned up when we found it buried under some other items. It originally came to us from a local Los Angeles area estate of a collector. The item is six antique Open Salt Cellars made of Silver, complete with Figural Spoons. There is actually three groups, each with two matching Salts in each. Although there are three different styles, they all have a “90” stamp on their underside which we believe is a silver 90% fineness number. The other common factor between them is that they all have elaborate repousse work on their side surface, which presents as highly detailed scenes in deep relief. The spoons paired with each also show a lot of visual flair, with the handles shaped in various figural ways as you can see. The spoons came to us with the Salts, but we don’t know if they were original to the pieces. The origin of the Salts is Thailand/Siam/Burma/India or similar, with items dating to circa mid 19th-century. The more we look at the Salts, the more we think there should be a maker mark hidden among the detail, but despite our best effort, nothing conclusive was found. The first style of Salt has a pedestal stand and smooth rim, with sides decorated with a detailed animal motif. The animals are large and show nice surface detail. These salts measure 2 inches high and weigh 35 grams each. They are paired with the 2 longer spoons, one with an Elephant handle, the other showing possibly a goddess or other human figure. The second style of Salt has a beaded rim and sits on three feet. These Salts have a dramatic Dragon motif, and are paired with spoons with Fish handles. These Salts are a bit shorter, measuring 1-3/4 inches in height and weighing 38 grams each. The third style of Salt also has a beaded rim and three feet, but is decorated with a Hunting motif, showing a variety of animals, and a single hunter with raised gun, ready to shoot. These Salts measure 1-7/8 inches in height and weigh 37 to 40 grams. They are paired with Scorpion handle spoons. The combined weight of the Salts, but not counting the spoons, is 222 grams. The spoons have no silver markings, so we are uncertain as to their composition. They weigh 42 grams. The combined weight of the entire lot is 264 grams. Condition: The Salts are in very good overall condition. A couple show evidence of small patches on their underside, and there are some scattered shallow bumps in a few places. All have moderate tarnish, especially on the textured areas of the surface. We noticed some slight bends on a couple of the spoon handles, but no real problems or issues. This is a nice estate lot, showing off some impressive repousse work, with Salts in exceptionally nice condition for their age and ready to make a good presentation on your behalf. All pictures show the actual Salts and Spoons that you will receive.
