Rare Pair of George III 1760s Sterling Silver Salt Cellars by Dorothy Mills
DESCRIPTION: Price is for the pair. Rare antique pair of Georgian salt cellars. What makes these rare is that they were made by Dorothy Mills, who was one of the first female silversmiths in the Georgian period. The pair date to the 18th Century. Both pieces are hallmarked on the bottom with the lion passant (sterling mark), pre 1821 crowned leopard for London, makers initials “DM” and date letter of a fancy cursive “G”(pic #5 and #6). The fancy cursive “G” dates this to 1762. Guaranteed to date to circa 1760s. The salt cellars have a great form with gadrooned rim, round body with 3 cabriolet legs ending on hoof feet. Dorothy Mills was one of the first Georgian female silversmiths making these highly collectible. Over 250 years old. Not perfect but good condition for age. No monograms on either. There are some pinpoint dings to each. Cabriole legs slightly bent causing slight tilt (easy fix for a silversmith). No large dents or repairs. Upon close inspection you may notice light wear and tiny scratches from normal age and use. Rare examples from Dorothy Mills. Each measures about 2 3/8″ in diameter and about 1 1/2″ tall. The pair weighs about 90 grams(both together). We have been long time collectors and dealers of early English Transferware, Quality 19th century furniture, and Victoriana.
