Antique English Sterling Silver Cauldron Open Salt Cellar Pair 1846
A rare set of 2 George John Richards hallmarked sterling silver 3 footed open Cauldron Salts. The hallmarks are worn but not beyond recognition. They have the G. R in a rectangle maker marking, the lion passant and lion head to signify the silver quality, the sovereign head for the duty mark of London and the date letter indicating 1846. The pair of salt cellars are ornately decorated on the top rim with wavy gadroons and sit on 3 capped legs that have a shell/clam design. They have a floral design on two sides and on the third side you will see a different decorative pattern and a center monogram of the script capital letter W on each. The salts have an open diameter of 2 and a height to the rim of 1 ½ with a combined weight of 3.125 ounces. They are accompanied with two sterling silver salt spoons that are also monogrammed with the script capital letter W on each. Both are hallmarked, one with just the lion passant and the other with the lion passant and a rectangle that shows the maker initials of T. I believe that this is Theodor Cohn for Asher & Co hallmarked London 1899, but others have suggested that they could quite possibly be from Thomas Chawner as well. The combined weight of the spoons is. 625 ounces and the are 3 ¾ inches in length. A great addition to your Victorian home décor or the perfect housewarming gift idea for someone truly special. Condition: In good condition considering the age, no dents, no cracks or splits. All stand firm and level to me. If you desire any further photos please do not hesitate to message me and I will be more than happy to provide anything additional that I can.
