1899 Fine Set 3 Gorham Sterling Silver Open Salt Cellars with Cobalt Liners
1899 Fine Set 3 Gorham Sterling Silver Open Salt Cellars w/ Cobalt Liners. Presented is a fine set of three sterling silver open salt cellars, with cobalt glass liners. The cellars were made by Gorham in 1899. The cellars have a beaded design around the rim and beautifully pierced openwork sides, that let the blue of the liners show through to very attractive effect. The spoons are not original to the salts, but match admirably in design. Two of the dishes are monogrammed ECC, in the center, which is not noticeable when the liners are present. The third dish has no monograms. The salts are in great overall condition. The silver openwork dish portions have no splits, no dents, no monogram removals, and no repairs. One of the glass liners is in perfect condition. One liner has a minor chip to the rim, mostly visible from the underside. The third liner has a chip to the rim that extends into a crack down the side. The liner with the crack is made from thinner glass and looks a bit lighter in color. The liners are all still useable. The underside of each salt is stamped’sterling’ and with the maker’s mark for Gorham. One of the salts is also marked with sickle date mark for 1899, the other two are undoubtedly from the same time frame. One of the spoons is stamped S. One is hallmarked with the lion passant for sterling silver, the anchor for the city of Birmingham, the date letter K for 1934, Made in England, and the maker’s mark for Adie Bros. The last spoon is hallmarked with the lion passant, the date letter b for 1817, and King George III’s head duty mark. The salts are about 3 1/4 inches in diameter and stand about 1 1/4 inches tall. Two of the spoons are about 3 3/4 inches long, the third spoon is about 3 1/2 inches long. The total weight for all three salts, including the glass liners, is 373 grams. The weight for just the silver dishes and spoons is 137 grams or 4.8 regular ounces. Powered by SixBit’s eCommerce Solution.
