C1760s American Colonial Silver Open Salt Cellar & Pepper Shaker by John Coburn
C1760s American Colonial Silver Open Salt Cellar & Pepper Shaker by John Coburn. Presented is a fantastic American pre-revolution coin silver salt and pepper set, consisting of an open salt cellar and pepper shaker. These pieces are by Boston silversmith John Coburn, and date to around the 1760s. The spoon is a later marriage, but matches admirably in style. The pieces are handsome and well made, in a very traditional style. The shaker is a baluster form, with alternating panels of engraved decoration around the pierced lid. The open salt cellar stands on three legs, ending in trefid form feet. Both pieces have a monogram of JB, appearing on the underside of the cellar and on the side of the shaker. It’s incredibly rare to find an American Colonial shaker and open salt cellar pair still together and in such great shape. As such, this is an exceptional opportunity for any collector of American silver. The salt and pepper set are in great condition. The salt cellar has no repairs, no splits, and no monogram removals. The pepper shaker has an old solder repair to the widest point of the body, which is hard to notice, and certainly at least 100 years old itself. The pepper shaker is in great shape otherwise, with no other repairs, no splits, and no monogram removals. We have not machine polished either piece, these pieces have had a gentle hand cleaning and are otherwise exactly as we found them. Both the salt and the pepper are stamped with the maker’s mark for Boston silversmith John Coburn, the shaker on the side and the salt on the underside. The spoon is stamped sterling and with the Webster maker’s mark. The shaker stands about 5 inches tall. The salt cellar measures about 2 1/2 inches in diameter and stands about 1 3/8 inches tall. The spoon is about 3 inches long. The total weight for the set is 177.5 grams, including the spoon. Without the spoon, the salt and pepper set weighs 171.5 grams.
