Beautiful antique late 19th century French Belle Epoque era sterling silver & vermeil set of open salt cellars with their original glass inserts and original salt spoons, crafted by Parisian silversmith Eugene Schifferlet, active from 1892. The set consists of 4 salt cellars and 4 matching salt spoons, embellished in finely detailed Rococo style decor with acanthus leaves, scrolling foliate and rocailles, surrounding a central cartouche monogrammed with initials JL. The interior of the cellars have vermeil finish gilded, gold-washed over sterling. Complete set, all with a beautifully ornate pattern and kept in the original fitted green velvet and cream silk lined presentation box. In very good condition. Just a bit of tarnish and some wear or age corrosion to the gilt interior of the cellars; no dents, breaks or repairs. No chips, cracks or damage to the glass inserts. Salt cellars and spoons bear the post 1838 French Minerva 1st standard hallmark. Maker’s marks are for Maître Orfèvre Eugene Schifferlet and shows an E and S separated by a lyre. He was active from 1892 till 1902 at 35 rue des Blancs-Manteaux in Paris. Salt cellars measure 2 5/8″ or 6,7cm length x 1 5/8″ or 4cm deep x 1 5/8 or 4cm tall. Spoons measure 2 5/8 or 6,7cm length. Total weight of the silver (without the inserts): 106gr. Total weight with box: 939gr. The gilded brown leatherette box is in fine shape with good working hinges & clasps. The exterior does have some wear, especially on the bottom. The interior lining is in very nice condition. Measures 8 3/4″ x 8 3/4″ x 2 7/8. (22,2 x 22,2 x 7,3cm).
