Presented is a wonderful pair of Gorham sterling silver master salt cellars, dated 1874. The cellars are done in an interesting rounded triangular form, likely copying a much older 1500s or 1600s style. The salts feature a fabulous cast design of scrolling foliage against a matte textured background, all very detailed and well done. The band of foliate decoration has a soft gold wash, contrasting the bright silver of the rim and feet. This pair is in great overall condition. One salt has a minor ding to its bottom edge, which is hard to notice without careful inspection and would not be seen during normal use. There are no splits, no breaks, no major dents, no cracks, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs. Each salt is stamped on the underside with the Gorham maker’s mark as well as sterling, the number 1290, and the date letter G for 1874. Each salt measures about 3 inches long and stands about 1 1/2 inches tall. The total weight for the pair is 247 grams or 8.7 regular ounces.
