Superb Georgian sterling silver salt cellar, fully hallmarked for Sheffield 1815. This is a fine quality silver master salt made in the reign of King George III by S C Younge & Co in Sheffield 1815. The salt has a flared top rim with chased gadrooned decoration and leaves and flowers. The body of the salt has superb chased panels with leaves and flowers and it stands on three chased lion head masks above paw feet. The salt has a crest to the underside. The salt is both large and heavy. It is 3-5/8 inches / 91 mm in diametre and it stands 2-3/8 inches 60 mm high. Made of thick gauge silver, the salt weighs an impressive 228 grams. The underside has clear hallmarks – lion passant, crown and O for Sheffield 1815, duty mark and maker’s mark SCY&Co for S C Younge & Co. The salt is in excellent condition with no dents, damage or repair.
