Georgian Sterling Silver Salt Cellar. This impressive salt cellar is made from high gauge sterling silver in cauldron form. It has pronounced reeded decoration to the rim and stands on three hoof feet with reeding to the feet and shoulders. Please note that there is an historic repair as detailed below. It comes complete with a blue glass liner that is the correct height but the diameter is very slightly too small so I dont think its the original. Although the hallmarks on the base are quite rubbed its possible to see the outline of the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopards head for the city of London and part of the date mark which is for 1762. At first sight, this piece is in beautiful condition with just three tiny, light dints to one section of the boy and a small dent near the base of another. However, on the third section, its possible to see a feint oval outline on the outside and, inside this, the silver looks slightly flatter than the surrounding area. From the outside, this isnt highly noticeable but, looking at this area from the inside, its possible to see a very pronounced oval area. Clearly, there has been a hole here at some stage which has been repaired although the repair is actually quite good. Also, from the inside, its possible to see a lump over one of the legs. It could be a bruise caused by a knock or it may have been reattached although there is no evidence of damage or repair to it on the outside and the cellar stands nice and level without a wobble. There is no damage to the glass liner. Ive shown all these areas in the photos and they are reflected in the asking price for what is still a usable, 255 year old piece.. Diameter – 6.3 cm (2.5) Spread – 8.3 cm (3.2) across the feet Height – 5 cm (2) Weight – 80 grams (weight of silver alone) 129 grams (combined weight of cellar and liner). Please see the photos below and feel free to get in touch with any questions. Prices are calculated to include the weight of packaging as well as the weight of the item. T charge for packaging.
