These master open salts are NOT monogrammed. They are in good estate condition, although. With the patina of old tarnish and fine scratches to be expected with age and use. The sets price reflects its condition. These elaborate master salt dips or nut dishes will make a lovely addition to any silver collection. The pair combined weigh approximately 2.115 troy ounces. Each is rpoughly 2.25 in diameter and 1.25 deep. Whiting traces its roots back to 1840 when Albert Crandall Tifft and William Dean Whiting started Tifft & Whiting in the rear room of a North Attleboro, Massachusetts, blacksmith shop. The concern became W. After a series of partnership changes, Whiting incorporated as the Whiting Manufacturing Company in 1866. Whiting was the last of the large silver concerns to abandon the apprentice system, and for a long time there hung on the wall of its office the last papers of indenture whereby a boy employee agreed to work for eight cents an hour, the rate being gradually increased until at the end of his four years apprenticeship he was paid fourteen cents an hour. In 1875, the Whiting plant was destroyed by fire and later was rebuilt in New York City where it remained until 1910 when the firm relocated to Bridgeport, Connecticut. And relocated again to Providence, Rhode Island. In 1924 Gorham stopped using the Whiting makers mark of a lion with a W under its paw. In 1905 the firm introduced a year symbol to their mark (on holloware), which appeared on all silver produced through 1924. Gorham also utilized a date mark, and WMCs adoption of a year mark may indicate the influence of Gorham, their parent company. (Holloware D)esigns that were manufactured more than once are marked with a number letter combination.
