As you can see from my store, I love Victorian European and American silver and holly / mistletoe items and this piece is absolutely lovely. Prettily detailed antique art nouveau salt cellar with glass insert by Charles Murat of Paris. Solid sterling silver, this is a French piece with raised mistletoe leaves and berries decorating all sides with a very period-appropriate Art Nouveau style. The spoon also has applied mistletoe leaves and berries. NO MONOGRAMS on the pieces. I have several art nouveau pieces listed as seen in the last photo so please send a note if interested. Marked with the Minerve head hallmarks for French Sterling Silver items. Also has the maker’s mark for Charles Murat who started silversmithing in the late 1800s. The spoon is also hallmarked in the spoon bowl with the Minerve head and maker’s mark, although the maker’s mark is hard to decipher there, but it is clearly a set. In estate condition considering age with some all over faint surface wear. There are some discolored areas on the inside around the feet, not visible when in use, but thought I would mention it. I had read that it is from the salt coming into contact with the silver and leeching out the copper from the sterling alloy causing the discoloration. A few shallow pin nicks but no distracting dents on the salt. There are also some ripples in the bowl of the spoon, either scratches or something that was done in the making because they look like wrinkles. Lastly, there is a crease on the back of the salt as seen in the photos where the silver separates to about half way down – I believe this may be intentional to allow the silver to flex a slight bit to hold the glass insert snuggly when you slide it in and out, but I thought I would mention it. The glass insert has no cracks or breaks but a few cloudy areas. Glass insert fits tightly and securely. I see no damage, scratching or nicks to the mistletoe designs. But as with all my estate items – Please see photos closely as this is not a mint condition item. Weighs 22 grams of sterling silver and 76 grams total with the glass insert.. It measures 2 1/2 inches by about 1 3/4 inches and stands 1.5 inches tall. Spoon is 3 inches long. I dearly love, collect, use and sell antique sterling silver flatware and household items so please check out my other listings including Tiffany & Co. Thanks for stopping by!
