This salt is so fun the way the it rests on three lion paw feet with lion heads sticking out the sides. The detail really pops off the table. This is a Gorham early 1900s open salt with a cobalt blue glass insert. This one is slightly later with the early 1900s style hallmark and is made in and marked Sterling. It’s a large enough size that it could be used to hold condiments or cream and would be beautiful at tea time or as a nice accent to any table. Please see photos and measurements to get an idea of size. The dish measures 2 3/4 wide rim to rim with the three lion faces protruding a bit further from the sides, itstands about 1 3/4 inches tall. Weight of the silver alone is 92 grams. Combined weight with the liner is about 155 grams so it is a very nice quality and sturdy piece of silver despite the petite size. The dish is marked Gorham with their hallmarks, Sterling, 38. Please note that due to age, this is in estate condition. There are quite a few stubborn tarnish spots on the outside between the lion heads, and many areas of stubborn tarnish and possibly corrosion inside the bottom of the salt as a result of the silver coming in prolonged contact with the salt. This is not visible when the cobalt liner is inserted, but it is there. The underside and inside edges of the rim also has some tarnish spots where it is hard to polish. The lions polished up nicely with some nice patina remaining in the background of their faces and the ribboned rim to provide an age appropriate contrast. I see no deep dings or dents which is surprising as these often have pin dings, but this one is very sturdy. There are some deeper scratches and utensil nicks around the bowl of the salt. Along with all over surface wear and scratches from use and polishing over the years. Again Please note this is not in mint condition. I have many more pieces of sterling flatware listed so please see my other auctions! I dearly love, collect, use and sell antique American sterling silver flatware and housewares including Tiffany and Co. Gorham, Durgin, Shiebler and more! I would be delighted if you’d follow me in my new store. Thanks for stopping by! Georg Jensen, the father of Scandinavian Silver, on the occasion of his 60th birthday remarked, Silver is the best material we have. The character of silver is satisfactorily obstinate, it has to be conquered and then it has the wonderful moonlight luster. [It] can seem like twilight, or, when it dews over, like ground mist rising. I COULDN’T AGREE MORE.
