A rare pair of 800 silver salt cellars formed as a boy and girl with baskets, marks for Hanau, Germany c. Each is dressed in 18th century costume and each holding a large open weave-pattern basket, supported on floral and scroll decorated mounds. This form, or close versions of it, was used by some of the great silversmiths such as Garrards, Hancocks, etc. These are later copies but very good copies. They are made of solid 800 silver, no cement loading at all. Each is hallmarked on the mound, though it is difficult to read because of the stipple background. 800, the Crescent & Crown mark (national for Germany since 1888), a standing lion with a crown above, ? .
