Pair of Georgian Sterling Silver Salt Cellars. These impressive, heavy salt cellars are made from high gauge sterling silver and are presented with their original blue glass liners. They are of oval form on pedestal feet and are decorated in the neo-classical manner with the dishes having roped edges, pierced galleries, drapes, a rosette to one side and a vacant cartouche to the other. The oval feet are also pierced with decorative swags and roped edging. Although there are remnants of British hallmarks on both cellars, they have become very rubbed over the centuries. On one, its possible to see half of the date letter S which, in this font, would be for London 1773. The letter F of the makers mark is also visible. On the other, its possible to see the paw of the Lion Passant (the sterling silver assay mark) and two letters of the makers mark which, I believe, are A. During this period, the only silversmith with this mark was Andrew Fogelberg who worked between 1767 and 1780. These cellars are in beautiful condition with no damage to the piercing that I can find and the decorative work is wonderfully crisp. The only things to mention are a number of tiny pinhead/pinprick dints to the lower sections of the dishes which arent highly noticeable due to their location. There is some pitting (blackening) to the silver on the inside of the dishes which will have been caused by the rubbing of the liners over the years. The liners are in good order with no cracks but there are some small nibbles around the inner edges of both. Length – 8.2 cm (3.25) Width – 6.3 cm (2.5) Height – 6.6 cm (2.6) Feet – 6.3 cm (2.5) by 4.5 cm (1.75) Weight – 93 grams & 90 grams (cellars without liners) 234 grams & 251 grams (including liners).
