ANTIQUE STERLING SILVER CURLING STONE NOVELTY PEPPERETTE & SALT CELLAR w/SPOON. Available for your consideration is this rarely seen, seldom available, Victorian era sterling silver novelty pepper shaker and salt cellar in the forms of a Curling Stone. The spoon for the cellar appears to represent a broom. The shaker was made by a different silversmith then the cellar and spoon. The shaker measures about 1 5/8″ tall and 1 5/8″ in diameter. Both the base and lid has proper hallmarks; the base is stamped with FF SF in shield for the maker Frank and Samuel Fenton (Fenton Brothers), Crown (City of Sheffield), Lion (purity) T in shield (date stamp for 1886 – Sheffield England), and Queen Victoria (1838 – 1890) duty stamp. The lid is stamped with matching maker, purity, date, and duty cartouches. The salt cellar measures about 1 11/16″ tall and 1 5/8″ in dimeter. The spoon measures about 2 3/4 long. Both of these pieces have matching hallmarks and production year date codes; Hamilton & Inches makers cartouche, 1880 date code, Edinburg city and purity marks. The interior of the lid has duty and purity stamps. There are general signs of light superfical scratch wear to the surfaces of all 3 pieces. The attached handle on the shaker seems to bend or twist slightly off dead center which may or may not be an indication of use wear. The cap on the shaker threads into the base with slightly less then machinist perfection, sitting almost perfectly flush at their mutual edge. The hinged cover for the cellar fits properly on the base and the hinge shows no indications of use wear damage. Please contact me if further explanations are required.
