A pair of coin silver tripod salt cellars executed and marked by George Sharp of Philadelphia for the firm of Shreve, Stanwood & Company, a predecessor of today’s Shreve, Crump & Low and a collateral ancestor of Shreve & Co. The round cellars are highly characteristic of Sharp’s work, in that they are decorated with the spheres that are the hallmark of his designs. The cellars stand on three legs that end in paw feet. The pair can be rather precisely dated through the marks. Sharp produced only for B. Ailey & Co from the 1850s until 1866, when he began silverware manufacturing on his own in his own shop. At the same time, Shreve, Stanwood, & Company existed only from 1860 through 1869, when it changed name. Thus, these salt cellars were made between 1866 and 1869. A vertical dent 1/4long in the side of one cellar with a bit of subtle irregularity surrounding it; some light salt pitting. 2″H x 2 1/2″Dia; 114 grams/3.66 ozt total weight.
