Ball, Black & Co. Pair of sterling silver open salts from the 1860s in Egyptian style with realistic figural motifs adorning the salts. A beaded rim at the base complements the rim with stylized natural motifs at the top. Each measures 4 1/8” in width by 2 1/2” in depth by 2 1/4” in height. Hallmarks and the monogram are shown. Successors to Marquand & Co, Ball, Tompkins & Black retailed silver in New York from the early 19th century onward. While their original store was at Broadway 247, they relocated in the 1860s to be across the street from their rival Tiffany. Tompkins left the company in 1851 and it continued to operate under the name of Ball & Black until 1876 when it participated in the creation of Black, Starr & Frost.
