Pair John Westervelt Coin Silver Master Salt Cellars Deer/Stag Handles
Presented is a near pair of American coin silver master salt cellars, likely produced between 1850 to 1875. This pair displays beautiful hand engraved decorations around the exterior. The outer edge and foot have a matching gadroon border. On each side there is a wonderfully cast stag /deer heads with grand antlers. One one side of each salt cellar, there is a monogram “Georgia” in a flowing script. One of the pieces has a bright gold wash on the interior. This set is very similar to Saxon Stag by Gorham. These are not an exact match. Everything is identical except the hand engraving in the center. The applied borders, the stag heads and the size are identical. Originally there were probably 2 sets. Now we have 1salt from each set. This is why one has a bright gold interior and the other does not. The underside is marked JLW, for John Lawson Westervelt, a New York maker from the mid to late 1800. This pair is in great overall condition. The piece with the gold wash has a small dent that can be seen on the inside, but hardly noticeable on the outside because of the engravings. The decorations and casted deer are crisp. There are no breaks and no repairs. Measurements: 4 3/4 inches across from handle to handle, 2 3/4 inches wide, and 2 1/4 inches tall. Weight: 196 grams or 6.9 ounces.
