Antique Victorian Egyptian Revival Sphynx Master Salt Cellars with Spoons in Box
Antique Victorian Egyptian Revival Sphynx Master Salt Cellars w/ Spoons in Box. Presented is an antique, English sterling silver salt cellar and spoon set made in 1878 for retail by Wood & Hughes. This Victorian set includes 4 master salt cellars and 4 master salt spoons. This set is done in an Egyptian Revival style, popular around the last quarter of the 19th century. The pieces are all hand engraved and chased. The handles of the spoons and the legs of the cellars have raised Sphinx or Pharaoh heads and all the cellars are hand engraved with design. This set comes in its original, form fitted, velvet lined box. Each piece is marked with the crown for Sheffield, the lion passant for sterling silver, a duty mark of Queen Victoria’s head, a date letter L for the year 1878, a maker’s mark of the initials JBB or JRB and a retailer’s mark for Wood & Hughes. There are no monograms. The engraved floral pattern on the side, as seen in the 5th photo, goes all the way around the salts. There are no monograms on the spoons. No monogram removals to anything. This set is in fabulous overall condition for its age and the designs are crisp. The fitted box has some wear, as you can see in the photographs, but the initerior is in good shape and it works wonders to protect the silver pieces. Each spoon measures 2 7/8 inches long. Each salt measures 2 inches in diameter and is 1 1/4 inches tall. Total weight of the set: 234 grams or 8.3 ounces. Powered by SixBit’s eCommerce Solution.
