This is a dream if you collect open salts. They are made in the 1880s, when everything, if not anything, was heavily influenced by Japanese culture. The shape of the salts, the butterfly, flowers and the ornate etching, as well as the brocade covered wooden case all reminds us of that type of style. There appear to be vermeil on the inside of the salts, but only a warm color left. They are in great condition showing no dents or dings. I have given these a light polishing and more effects can be used to bring them to a complete shine. Each is 1 3/8 inches across and over 1/2 inches tall. The total weight is 194.3 grams, 6.25 troy ounces. They come with the original brocade covered wooden box, although the fabric is quite frayed due to age. Each fits nicely in it’s own spot in the box. The hallmark indicates they are made by Gorham, sterling silver, from the 1880s. A nice piece of history and rare complete set.
