CASED ENGLISH STERLING SILVER SET 4 SALE CELLARS. MADE BY JAMES BARKLEY HENNELL 1881. Pleased to offer a complete set of 4 salt cellars with original spoons by the rarely seen James Barkley Hennell. James was the last brother of the Hennell dynasty of silversmiths. Each of classic circular form, with raised beaded edge and with beading on sloped footed base. A unique pattern of Moorish style symbols against a mottled dimpled engraved edge background that encircles the top half of the cellar. 4 matching spoons with beading and round ball finial terminal. In most excellent original antique condition bearing no dents, dings, cracks, splits, repairs or damage of any kind yes.. The case has one side hinge separated. Each salt cellar measures 1 1/2 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches tall. The set of 4 weighs 200 grams (7oz). All salt cellars and spoons bear exactly the same hallmarks: Lion passant for assayed English sterling, Leopards head for London, Regents head for Queen Victoria, Date letter of “B” within a shield for 1877, makers mark of JBH within a rectangle for James Barkley Hennell. David Hennell obtained his freedom (1735) and opened his own business in Gutter Lane in 1736. David Hennell retired in in 1773 c. And the family business was continued by Robert Hennell (I). Robert Hennell (II) (born 1763) was the nephew of Robert Hennell (I). He was apprenticed in 1778 to his uncle and to John Houle (engraver). He obtained his freedom in 1785 probably working only at engraving until 1808 when he entered in partnership with Henry Nutting. The partnership lasted until 1809 when Robert Hennell (II) entered a mark by his own (35 Noble Street, Foster Lane). In 1817 the firm moved to 3 Lancaster Court, Strand and to 14 Northumberland Street, Strand in 1828. In 1868, at the death of Robert Hennell (III), the firm was taken by his two sons Robert Hennell (IV) and James Barclay Hennell. PERFECT FOR DAILY USE OR DISPLAY.
