These beautiful small dishes were originally for salt or other table condiments, but they also work fine for your keys or coins. As with the other glass-lined sterling table dishes, the intent of the cobalt glass was to accommodate a condiment that would otherwise damage or tarnish the silver, or need to be washed frequently. Hence, mustard, sugar, jam, salt–and probably olives, pickles, capers–anything made with vinegar or substantial salt. These dishes were for’day of’ use, not for long-term storage (except perhaps salt and pepper). They did not normally seal air-tight. They simply had to hold enough for that meal or day. Condition: No visible damage to silver or glass liners. Size: OD 1 1/8″ high x 3 1/8″ wide. ID of liner: 2 7/8. Weight of silver (without cobalt glass): 34 grams for both dishes together. Hallmark: “Sterling” and Webster hallmark. Part of a group of sterling with cobalt blue glass (see last photo) from an estate with fine sterling and glass. ABOUT Happy Hour Antiques & Auctions.
