Presentation Set of Two Gorham c. 1858 Coin Silver Salt Cellars w 1855 Gorham Spoons. Truly a rare set… Box is in poor condition, however inside it reads Bailey, Chapman & Co. Bailey & John C. The two salt cellars have three lion’s heads with paw feet. They are marked Coin and with early maker’s marks for Gorham. They have the Lion Facing Left (Sinistral). Very small pattern wear, considering their age. The features on the lion are very crisp and distinct! One of the salt cellars is script monogrammed Mrs Thomas Ruffin. Thomas Carter Ruffin of NC? According to the Handbook of Gorham Open Salt Dishes by George & Carolyn Tompkins… The salt cellars are Pattern GM16 c. They measure 2.8″W x 1.6″H and have heavy repoussé’ features. One appears to have never been monogrammed. The salt spoons are a very early Gorham Josephine pattern of 1855. One is marked Coin, Pat 55 and the Five-Point Star. Journeyman mark for Gorham & Co. The other is script monogrammed Mrs Thomas Ruffin the handle and is marked as above, but no star. See pg 133 Manufacturers’ Marks on American Coin Silver by John R.
