Note the box is hallmarked for Gorham but the salts are only hallmarked Sterling with the pattern number. Fantastic quality pair of two figural Aesthetic master salt dishes in a figural wishing well form with lifelike textured bricks and applied Ivy vines on the front and back of each salt. The leaves of the ivy are faintly gold washed, and the rounded interiors of the salts are also vibrant vermeil. The designs really pop on these nicely made pieces not frequently seen. Large size with very sturdy hand feel weighing 110 grams of solid sterling silver each. The pair comes in its original maroon leather box. It looks like there were originally 2 salt spoons that came with it but they are missing. Each tab of the box is marked with an anchor in the background with Gorham’s G. “, and the box is also stamped “Patented Mar. 19.72 for the patent year of 1872. Beautifully detailed intricate designs of bricks, leaves and vines. Each dish measures 2 1/2 inches in diameter at the opening and 3 1/8 inches wide at the flared base. They stand 1 3/4 inches tall. Weighs 220 grams combined, they are very thick silver work and not bendable. Marked on the underside of each 925 Sterling and 26. In good estate condition considering age with just a tiny pinhead impressions and a few nicks and scratches on the smooth insides of the salts, where the wear is made more evident by the mirrored finish. A few stubborn tarnish spots but they cleaned up nicely. One leaf has a crease to the silver that may have been done in the making, I showed this in photos. I don’t see any deep dings or sharp dents. The bricks are textured differently between the two salts which was likely hand done by the silversmith. They seem as if they were hardly ever used. Has been hand polished but retains some patina in the background to really make the design stand out. No damage or wear to any of the Ivy designs that I could see. Please see photos closely as this is not a mint condition set due to age of over 130 years. Thanks for stopping by my store!
